Sand, Pitch, and Chip

Short Game Instruction - Greenside Bunker

Key Points to successful shots out of the bunker:
Set up with more weight leaning on to target foot, ball position forward of center.
  1. Grip VERY lightly and more in fingers. Relax your arms.
  2. Hinge wrists first to start swing. (Pick Thumbs straight up)
  3. "Strike match" loose, soft hands and arms, accelerate thru impact using trail edge (sole - bottom of club) to splash sand under ball.
  4. Turn chest thru over target foot, finish with all weight on target foot.

Use these 2 drills to help feel correct sensations. Listen for correct "thump" of the sand, with quick strike match feeling.

Feel Where to Enter the Sand - Line Drill

Feel correct takeaway and downswing in bunker - The Lip Drill

Short Game Instruction - Chipping

Watch video below for correct chipping setup- Picture chip shots like throwing a bowling ball down an alley. The bowling ball remains low to the ground and rolls most of the way to the target. Chipping usually is used the closer to the edge of the green we are.

Criss-cross Feet Drill

This chipping drill will help you be more aware of your spine/sternum during the chipping motion. Often times when golfers are chipping they lean back in an effort to help lift the ball, this will cause thin and fat shots. Practice this drill to get the proper feel of keeping your upper body over your target foot.

Extend Club Shaft Drill:

This is a great chipping drill to give you the correct feel of how your hands/wrists work at impact. Be careful when doing this drill as the shaft will hit you in the rib cage if you use your hands incorrectly during the chip shot. Watch the video below:

Short Game Instruction - Pitching

Picture Pitching as a Softball toss, ball floats high in the air. This shot is usually used further from the edge of the green and/or when there is sand/water in our way and we need to hit it over these objects.
